The Lower Case’s founders are an experienced group who have collectively produced, directed, and hosted immersive and interactive experiences in NYC.

We wanted a space to prototype our work and resolved to come together to build the missing venue to provide an easy launchpad for immersive theatre: open, reconfigurable, and playtest-friendly. We are highly motivated to become the ideal space for the quick iteration of immersive work; please reach out  if you’re interested in collaborating with us!

  • Dustin Freeman

Dustin’s PhD studied the use of live gesture input in projection-mapped theatre, advised by professors in the Computer Science and Drama Department of the University of Toronto. Since then, he’s worked as a research scientist and prototyper in gesture input via computer vision, neural signals and more. (Microsoft Surface, Xbox Kinect, Occipital Bridge, CTRL Labs), most recently at Meta Reality Labs for 4 years.

Dustin started out in theatre by performing and directing longform improv, training 100s of high school students for 5 years as part of the Canadian Improv Games. He branched out into telepresence VR theatre with Raktor (2016-2017), bluetooth beacons for immersive audio AR (2017), and online participatory theatre in the show The Aluminum Cat (2018-2019, Indiecade “Innovation In Experience Design” Award Winner). He’s excited to take advantage of The Lower Case’s fiber internet to make hybrid shows with simultaneous in-person and remote participation.
